Trudeau bringing back "gold-plated" health plans for all - even failed refugee claimants

Brian LilleyArchive

Just in time for more than 25,000 refugees from Syria, the new Liberal government has announced they will reverse changes to the refugee health care system brought in by the Conservatives.

In 2010 the Conservatives promised and later delivered on changes to make sure refugees and failed refugee claimants were not getting better health care coverage than Canadians.

Jason Kenney, felt the gold plated plan for refugees, "should be no more generous than is typically the case within provincial health-care programs.”

He undertook a thorough review and in the end, some things that Canadians cannot get from their government plans like eye care and dental care were taken away. Other procedures, including easier access to surgery, were added to the plan though you never heard about that.

Since media were too lazy or too partisan to check claims made by opposition parties and refugee advocates, they only talked about "cuts" and now Liberal immigration minister John McCallum is promising to reverse what he terms "draconian" cuts.

We had provincial governments, premiers and health ministers writing to the feds demanding they restore the old system and reverse cuts even though the cuts only stopped paying for things provincial plans didn't pay for.

Reality check: The current plan in place provides tiered access to healthcare depending on what category the person is in but even failed refugee claimants, people that have been ordered out of the country, still have access to basic health coverage until they are finally sent home.

Under the Liberals we can expect the limited deportations to slow down and the healthcare benefits to ramp up. And you won't hear all the facts from other media outlets either.

A number of years ago someone dear to me got the news they had an aggressive moving cancer while they were living in the U.S. This person was a Canadian citizen who had been living out of the country for a number of years and were told they would have to wait 3 months before they would qualify for O.H.I.P. I am not opposed to our country helping people out I just wondered when we became second class citizens?

Too bad Canada doesn’t have the spine to respond to the refugee crisis like Japan did. I would stay and fight for my country not run away. Now we have to pay their way to come here. Trust me, when they arrive they’ll have no problem fighting for “their” rights and entitlements. It would have been cheaper to fund them to win back their own country. They come and use our Constitution against us. It’s time to change the Constitution, to tighten up the loopholes. Think I’ll get a red burqa because that’s how I feel, burning up.

Sam said, "We can not afford to deal with problems from other countries. "

Not to mention the severe drain on the welfare and health care systems.

@ George’s Mom – Do you recognize sarcasm? My becoming a refugee was a sarcastic comment meant to emphasize just how badly Notley is screwing over Albertans. I think Kelvin understood my comment as sarcasm.

As as for the changes to the Health Care that the Trudeau government is going to do, I know that Brian Lilley is correct and that you are wrong.

Now George’s Mom, go back to being the little boy you really are, play your WoW game with your little friends in your mommy’s basement and wait for your mommy to call you for din-din. That’s a good little boy.

A lot of these refugees are not refugees. They are economic migrants, disguising themselves as syrian refugees. Hence, why many of them have fake id.

We should be more like Austrailia. When the refugees or the migrants show up, Austrailia tells them to turn around.

We got enough problems of our own in our backyard. We can not afford to deal with problems from other countries. The american should deal with the migrants, as they were the ones who created all the chaos in the middle east.

Well PETER, I guess if you feel that being a refugee is a pretty fun ride you could give up your home, most of what you own, your network of friends and family, your prospects, your culture and language, and put yourself at the mercy of Canadian bureaucrats.

And if you wanted to make it a more realistic experience you could also spend some time beforehand as a civilian, trying to care for yourself and maybe your family too, in a war zone, or under threat of abuse, torture, and death.

Yum. Can’t wait to get me some!

Sadly, for all that sacrifice – and despite what Brian wants you to believe – even prior to the changes the Harper Gov brought in, you still would not have receive healthcare benefits beyond that typically available to those on provincial social assistance.

It’s true our tax dollars do provide very basic support for people who show up here with pretty much nothing at all. And while I expect the system and is abused by some what would you propose as a reasonable alternative?

@ Peter Babich – Well Peter, people were always asking me why I didn’t buy a house. My job loss because of Notley, and yes the low oil prices, is one main reason. The price of housing is dropping here, so selling would probably be at a loss. It is sad that the Notley & her crew of children are making such wonderful salaries off of our tax dollar while people lose their jobs, homes and more. Makes me sick to my stomach.
commented 2015-11-09 20:47:42 -0500
Well Kelvin, if we have to leave because Notley is trashing the oil and gas industry, then we just might be able to qualify as refugees.
commented 2015-11-09 20:40:02 -0500
Well they might as well take my house too cause I can’t figure out how I’ll keep it or anything else I’ve worked for

Even Romania organized mass protests so that their Prime Minister had to quit and step down! I wish people who have the knowhow and the power to do so can organize mass marches on Ottawa to say NO TO 25,000 refugees. Muslims rent buses to take ppl to Toronto for Al Quds Day is there no one who can do this to rent buses to take us to Ottawa? Something drastic must be done… drastic but legal!

Peter, I we left Alberta to go ……… Well I don’t know where , would we be refugees?
commented 2015-11-09 20:17:10 -0500
I wonder if I can somehow make myself become a refugee. Then I can get free full healthcare, free place to live, free living expenses.

Suck it up Sam – maritimers – kebecers and Ontario – bastards all – did this to you.

My friend in Alberta has laid everyone off if they come from the east – and has told them he will not only never hire them back but he will never hire another one again.

As he told them all – one at a time – “You might not have voted for the libs out here but everyone of your families did back in your home – here is your severance now get out of my office – do not bother to ever come back – we no longer need you.”

Keep working Sam or you will go very hungry – and for heaven’s sake – do not get sick!!!

Dear Diary;
All in all it was a pretty good weekend. I taught those backroom boys a lesson they won’t soon forget. They think they got one over on me by saddling my young and vibrant cabinet with that old stock Canadian lush McCallum, but the jokes on them. He’s to get 25,000 migra . . , oops, refugees, here by Christmas, and while he’s at it I’ve told him to convince my subjects to believe that Harper totally wiped out healthcare benefits for refugees, but without letting them know that those refugees were actually on the Enhanced Healthcare Coverage plan, just like confessed and convicted murdering terrorists and Members of Parliament.
No point in stirring up a hornet’s nest by revealing that all Harper did was to put them on the same Basic Healthcare Coverage plan that ordinary Canadian peon’s . . , oops, people enjoy. Anyhoo, this should be enough to keep the old fogy out of my fabulous hair for a while.
Gerald’s just told me that it’s time to get my nose back to the grindstone. Sometimes I think that he believes my looks are all I’ve got.

Oh gee, that is just great. My tax dollars go to the refugees, while I have to buy my own extended health benefits. Just last week, my premiums went up.

So do the refugees all get a number similar to how the aboriginals get a treaty number to use to get free health benefits?

I put this up on anther thread and I believe it to be important for this one as well…..

No probs – a bunch of free loaders from Syria just hit the hospital my sister works in – the husband, 9 kids and two pregnant “aunts” plus the “mother” – who just happened to be the same age as the oldest kid. Around 20 years old. The father and husband was around 50 years old.

All getting free medical that exceeds what the Canadian tax payer gets – free glasses, free prescriptions, free dental – then the free training and the free clothing and the free housing.

Know any seniors, homeless, aboriginals that could use some of this? Even perhaps a few minimum wage earners?

Naahhh…… we can afford it – after all the libs tell us we are in the wealthiest country in the world.

Oh, did I mention that two had TB (one combined with a suspected case of polio) and three had STD’s of some sort? Hope your vaccination are up to date because some of that stuff is contagious and where have they been since they arrived in Canada last week?

Why do you think the military stuck me absolutely full of needles before allowing me to go there……

The folks at the hospital were surprised to see them – and had no idea how bad they were medically and dentally speaking.

My sister said the nurses were starting to think – Oh my! And there are thousands coming!

Too little and too late.

Nurses spent hundreds of thousands in Ontario to ensure the libs got in – now they will see what they did.

Get ready folks – our health care system is not very robust – you thought you had long waits before? They will not only get longer – you will go down towards the bottom of the pile as the refugees take priority – on government orders.

Canadian voters – they did this to themselves – no wonder Canada is becoming the wasteland – voters do not have the brains to see the repercussions of their stupidity.

Billions and billions will be spent upon this – and at a time when we can least afford it. Yes, billions and billions – and one for those who live here and pay taxes.

Thank you Maritime bastards and kebec and Ontario bastards – may Toronto be the scene of a raging and deadly pestilence brought in by the very people who hate us enough to kill us once the cash and gifts start slowing down.

You might try writing to your member of parliament – but then again – can you even think you will be considered anything but a trouble maker?

Have fun!

Good column and I agree with you Brian. However, I’m already getting sick of seeing hairboy’s stupid mug in the videos. I already cancelled macleans rotten mag as I can see it ramping up the rapture on hairboy. Do you think you could see your way clear to just putting a sign “Pic of Hairboy here” instead of real video – thank you very much and keep the good work..

Future Lieberal voters? No problem. Taxpayers will be forced to pay for this! So much for concern for the middle class! Another lie from the Lieberals! Screw taxpayers to gain Lieberal votes! It is going to be a long 4 years, assuming Trudope dosen’t declare a dictatorship (which he admittedly admires) in the meantime!

If i ever see a liberal starving or freezing to death on the street i will make sure to help some wealthy immigrant instead of them.

Of course, war criminals and murderers and rapists need better benefits than people who have worked and paid taxes all their lives and never killed or raped anyone. My Fiances ex is dying of cancer in Quebec and he gets a whopping 800 a month from the government, would any leftie please tell me why that is fair and just? Or that senior in Ontario whos sons had to crowdfund a wheelchair while a POS off of a boat would get a shiny new one for free. LIBERALS MAKE ME WANT TO PUKE.
