Justin Trudeau's Liberals want to take a bite out of your discounted staff meal.
The latest copy of the federal government's tax folio says that as of January 1, 2018, the value of an employee discount gets added back into an employees income, so it can be taxed.
Normally, the government taxes you for doing one of two things: earning and spending.
This time, retail and restaurant workers — the working poor — are going to be taxed on the value of money they didn't spend.
But this tax grab isn't just about the employees, many of them the very young people that Trudeau campaigned on helping. This is also another attack on Canada's entrepreneurial class by Justin Trudeau.
Some companies will eliminate employee discounts rather than deal with the paperwork nightmare.
But that's Trudeau and Bill Morneau, so silver spooned and pampered that they think people working their way through university are a bunch of burger flipping tax cheats.
