Trump-era diplomacy: U.S. pastor freed without paying ransoms

Ezra LevantRebel Commander

On last night's episode of The Ezra Levant Show, I reported on President Trump managing to free Andrew Brunson, an American Christian pastor held hostage in Turkey.

Turkey is a dangerous place to be Christian, it's ruled by authoritarian President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan who's moving the country in an increasingly Islamist direction.

When the Turks arrested Pastor Brunson, they were living in the pre-Trump era of Barack Obama's America. Turkey thought they could use Brunson as a bargaining chip to negotiate for the deportation of Turkish dissident Fethullah Gulen.

But this is Trump's America, and he's not going to play their games.

On this issue, I have always felt uncomfortable with attempts by Christian ministers to proselytize in Islamic countries.
Just as I would resent Muslims seeking to convert Christians in Christian countries to Islam, so I would prefer that Christians did not seek to convert Muslims to Christianity in Islamic countries.
It is a matter of a reciprocal recognition of regional cultural and religious sentiments. It is really no more than a matter of courtesy.
Having said that, I do know that Anatolia (present day Turkey) once comprised a collection of Christian provinces within a Christian empire (the Eastern Roman empire), until Anatolia’s invasion and ultimate conquest by Islamicized Turks. And therefore, Christian proselytization in Turkey might be said to be no more than an attempt to undo the forced Islamicization long ago (over one thousand years ago) of a conquered Christian people.
