If you’re a classical liberal or a libertarian like me, you probably already believe that universities shouldn’t get public funding.
I personally believe that our universities should be privately owned institutions.
If you don’t agree, would you change your mind if I told you that those same publicly funded universities also silence students and professors on campus?
Donald Trump wouldn’t. After the chaos at UC Berkeley when Milo Yiannopoulos tried to speak, Trump tweeted:
“If U.C. Berkeley does not allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a different point of view - NO FEDERAL FUNDS?”
What happened to Milo happens to almost every non-leftist speaker invited to a university.
The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms is an organization that monitors free speech and expression on university campuses.
Each year, they publish a list of universities, then give them an overall letter grade based on how well the administration and student union upholds free speech on campus.
In 2014 and 2015, Canadian universities earned 41 Fs, and only 8 As.
And, of course, 2016 wasn't much better.
WATCH as I review the grades they handed out to top Canadian universities.
Recently, Professor Jordan Peterson was denied a bid for a research grant at the University of Toronto. Many are speculating that this was due to his stance on gender pronouns.
I have a better idea for you, University of Toronto (the same university that received an F for your anti-free speech policies and practices.) How about we deny you and other schools funding for trying to censor your professors and students?
