During my most recent attempt at riding Toronto’s public transit, I looked around the crowded subway car and wondered if the heaping helping of disrespect and disdain for others, was indeed the “new normal.”
If so, I can’t really blame the TTC for launching a poster campaign last April seeking to teach civilized members of homo sapiens how to act as civilized members of homo sapiens.
Their “You Said It” ads make use of actual tweets from TTC riders complaining about inconsiderate and even unsafe behaviour that has increased over the years, and came about as a result of a horrendous breech of etiquette on a subway car recently.
Here’s hoping these ads pay dividends.
And let’s be grateful they didn’t go down the same ludicrous social engineering path circa 1977 when their ads told us to just say “meep-meep” instead of “excuse me” because fewer and fewer riders spoke English in diverse Toronto.
