TTC launches ad campaign to deal with uncivilized “new normal” on Toronto subways

David MenziesMission Specialist

During my most recent attempt at riding Toronto’s public transit, I looked around the crowded subway car and wondered if the heaping helping of disrespect and disdain for others, was indeed the “new normal.”

If so, I can’t really blame the TTC for launching a poster campaign last April seeking to teach civilized members of homo sapiens how to act as civilized members of homo sapiens.

Their “You Said It” ads make use of actual tweets from TTC riders complaining about inconsiderate and even unsafe behaviour that has increased over the years, and came about as a result of a horrendous breech of etiquette on a subway car recently.

Here’s hoping these ads pay dividends.

And let’s be grateful they didn’t go down the same ludicrous social engineering path circa 1977 when their ads told us to just say “meep-meep” instead of “excuse me” because fewer and fewer riders spoke English in diverse Toronto.

You’re fortunate that you can drive. Disabled folks like me are stuck with the miseries of public transit. If it wasn’t for the human scum riding the rails and camped out in the busses, public transit would be half way decent. It isn’t that way and nothing is being done to make it safer. O sure there are cameras but reprobates don’t give even a token darn about behaving their age.

Bad behavior? One might say it is a symptom of a Lieberal voter……….

Allan Peterson,

You should watch Ezra’s commentary defending the use of curse words and why intelligent people use them.

I did, He’s wrong.

Highly unusual, I know, for someone who is accused of being in “lock step” with Ezra but there you have it. Hyacinth’s post is far more intellectual and creative than some potty mouth such as the Griffin hag spewing her verbal sewage like a sewage ejector system

Between the BO and 50 different perfumes/cologne….public transit reeks. I haven’t taken a bus in 20 years.

As Archie Bunker used to tell Meathead, “get your dogs off the table!”

Good manners shows respect for yourself and others. And once you have turned into a self-centered and self-entitled twit, then you are just looking for a fight because you’ve turned into a selfish bully!

I’d like to hear Mr-Babies-Are- Parasites pontificate on how none of this is a moral issue it is just about respect . And so I again pose my question that he never answered.: if I don’t want to show respect and move my feet, what are you going to do about it?

What else can you expect from the toilet of Canada, the people are too busy swirling around the bowl to notice the stench.

Hyacinth, that was classic. You captured the essence by the imagery you chose. Yet you did it without being crude and vulgar which gave it more power. Unlike Drive-BY-Jack who thinks he is making a point more powerfully by his verbal sewage.

Edmonton is a little better , but the problems seem to stem from minorities more often than not.

Hyacinth Toilet is quite a fitting noun.

If the Savage didn’t have his feet on the seat the whole thing would not have occurred. All that uncivilized POS had to do was take his feet off the seat. If anyone things the woman overreacted then maybe you would like to invite over to your plav=ce of residence “Mr Happy Feet” and have him sprawl his feet out on your couch. If his feet are muddy, wet or have something on them like dog doo or grease, etc. Remember someone else ends up sitting on that seat and it could be you. All the power to the lady standing up for everyone’s rights.

Jonathan Bryant, the last time I visited Moncton I tried to ride Codiac Transit from downtown Main Street to Hildegarde, after already researching all the possible connections. So when I paid my fare and asked for a transfer the driver asked me what route I wanted to transfer to, I said what difference does it make, there’s two possible ways I can get from my transfer point to my destination so why are you telling me that I have to pick one of them? He said, well, because you have to. I said, I just paid a full fare. What the fuck? Normally when you pay a full fare and ask for a transfer you are good for 90-120 minutes in any direction.
So he asked me, where do you come from? I told him I am originally from from New Brunswick but I have lived and worked and paid taxes in Alberta for several decades and I have used public transit in many different places in North America and the last time a bus driver gave me a hard time about the validity of my transfer was about a quarter of a century ago in Edmonton and he lost the argument.
He loudly announced for all to hear that it’s good that the transit system in Calgary can offer such loose arrangements but here in Moncton we have a different system so if you don’t like it i can give you back your fare and you can get off and walk.
So I took my money and I walked for an hour and a half to my sister’s place, and I had a smile on my face every step of the way.
Don’t kid yourself, Johnathan. You don’t have to go to the big city to meet power-tripping assholes who drive busses.

Public transit, public education, public healthcare – 3 things that you pour more & more money into in order to get worse & worse results.

As a New Brunswicker visiting Toronto for the very first time in my life I was excited at the prospect of riding a subway with my mom. That is until I was forced to be seperated from her and could not carry on a conversation with her as she was also my guide, having lived there in her younger years. And trust me there is no mistaking the family resemblance. Plus we also took a couple buses. One driver was so rude he wouldnt help a couple of obviously lost out of towners make sure they got the right bus to go from west Toronto to downtown and this was around 11pm. Dont even get me started on the filth that I saw on the bus and people with their dogs. No these werent working dogs they were clearly little fido and poochy. None of this is tolerated here in New Brunswick. If you have your feet on the seat in front of you, yes we have seats facing each other, the driver will tell you to remove your feet. Most people will move from an elderly/physically disabled reserved seat even on an near empty bus for the elderly or disabled person, heck even for a parent with a stroller. People can say alot of crap about us Maritimers but you will never find a more polite and friendly and hospitable people in the country.

Meep Meep.?? Are you kidding me… !! No wonder we are in the shitshape that we’re in because we are de-evolving from a spoken language into a series of whistles and grunts and have been taught that it benefits us.!?!?!? Pre-requisite number one… fluently speak the language of the country you want to enter and become a citizen of… How can you be productive if you can’t speak the language. They are nothing at all but a liability at this point but they are then and always will represent a block voting group for the politician who offers them the most free shit .
What a chickenshit country .

As far as that guy and the woman who initiated the confrontation are concerned, I think they’re both jerks.
