Two officers were stabbed today in Schaarbeek, a district in Brussels today in what is already being described as a suspected terrorist attack.
Belgian media report that Hicham D is known to Belgian police and is believed to have links to jihadists who travelled to Syria to fight. He also served as a Belgian army officer until 2009.
A 17-year-old French high school student, Stan Racine, witnessed the attack.
“The suspect pulled out a knife and attacked a policeman, and hurt him in the stomach and leg,” he told CNN.
“The policeman then pulled out his pistol and shot the suspect in the leg.”
He said the suspected then shouted something in what he believed was Arabic.
Also today in Brussels, the Gare du Nord railway station was closed for an hour due to a bomb scare.
Belgium continues to be at a high level of alert due to terrorist attacks at its public transportation hubs in the past year.
