Unifor’s $180K Super Bowl ad: Helping laid off GM Canada workers? Or Jerry Dias?

David MenziesMission Specialist

GM Canada will be closing its Oshawa, Ontario plant in the months ahead, meaning more than 2,000 lost jobs.

It’s a tragedy, and there are myriad reasons for the closure, some of which I’ve addressed previously.

But, if I were a rank and file member of Unifor, I think I’d be really ticked anew given that bizarre ad that ran during the Super Bowl.

For one thing, Unifor spent $180K to run the 30-second gem entitled, “GM Leaves Canadians Out in the Cold,” and that’s just the beginning of the problems with this ad.

And, as much as Jerry Dias claims to be going to bat for Canadian autoworkers, what he really means to say is that he’s going to bat for Canadian autoworkers who pay dues to Unifor – so he can continue to draw his six-figure salary and benefit package.

Could it be that Jerry’s outrage is less motivated about saving jobs – unionized or otherwise – and more about raising his profile for a future run in politics?

Dias has been an insufferable anti conservative. He’s an outspoken pro leftist anti business which is a surprise in that his union depends on private business in part to succeed. Unifor represents the Kitchener CTV employees which makes one wonder just how “unbiased” is the news that we get from them as it concerns Unifor.

The Unions helped run GM into bankruptcy and then most of the hourly union members were protected in contrast to the stockholders and white collared salaried employees who got screwed.
When the plant closing was announced , I had to google the products they were manufacturing in Oshawa because I had no idea what they looked like . That’s how popular the products were.No identity, no appeal
Sad to see people lose jobs but no business can build products nobody wants and survive unless of course they are subsidised by the taxpayer. I think that train has left the station.

UNIFOR can’t do a thing about a plant closing. Instead of an ad asking why our government hasn’t done anything to try to save the jobs, he just goes after an easy target: GM.

Facts? He doesn’t need facts. He makes up facts as he goes.

I wonder, how many of those working in parts supply in Ontario, and car dealership staff, will be out of work if he gets his wish? Maybe we should be asking if any of those soon-to-be unemployed under his scheme are UNIFOR members. If unionised with another union, how exactly is his ad showing solidarity with other union workers?

From what I heard, the Superbowl commercials kept being interrupted by a football game.

“Could it be that Jerry’s outrage is less motivated about saving jobs – unionized or otherwise – and more about raising his profile for a future run in politics? "

Well that’s bordering on a flair for the obvious.

But do I really care? I mean, I remember all the big unions up on stage, laughin’ and sctachin’ with Dildo McDinky and Wynne – supporting all the labour legislation and the environmental laws and all the regulatory red tape that made it untenable for their companies to remain open in this Country.

As much as I despise that slime, Jerry Dias, in this case he is at least closer to what is is supposed to do for the UNIFOR members, an advertisement for their jobs. At least this ad is not a political ad attacking the Conservatives.

Okay, that is about as much positive as I can muster for that slime ball.
