Universities need more debate, less censorship

Rebel Staff

I’m heading to my the fourth year as a university student. I’ve seen firsthand what ideologically motivated students and professors will do to push their narrative.

I’ve seen campus clubs get their club status revoked for purely ideological reasons like the Men’s Rights Group at Ryerson. The student union banned them claiming these groups harass women when they have no evidence.

I’ve seen speakers “no-platformed,” like at McMaster University where a pro-life activist and mother simply wanted to show what an abortion looked like at a presentation, and students retaliated by playing loud music, shooting Silly String, picking fights with the spectators and the police.

Since the story broke, the Rebel has been reporting on Jordan Peterson, a professor at the University of Toronto who doesn't want to use a bunch of made up genders.

The university is twisting his arm, and, because Bill C-16 was just passed by a Liberal government, it also has a legal excuse to force him to talk like they do.

Jordan Peterson stands up for everyone’s freedom of speech and expression— and I’m proud to be on his side.

I’m not with the Liberal government. I’m not with anyone who advocates for violence of any kind (government silencing or otherwise). I’m also not with the LGBT or Black Lives Matter.

I’m with freedom and whoever infringes upon anyone’s freedom is my intellectual enemy.

Hey, universities, Liberal government, political leftist movements and organizations:Let’s debate!

Let’s have an honest, intellectual conversation about differing opinions on campus and beyond.

Let’s not devolve to censorship and infringing people’s free speech rights. We’re better than that!

Right you are Edward.

I take exception with the last line, we used to be better than that is what it should say.

Take a good look people this is where the liberal path has led us.

Liza Rosie: To me the real irony is the deception being perpetrated by the governments suggesting that Trump wants to censor news while all along they have been doing it and now realizing they haven’t gone far enough because they failed to anticipate the impact of the internet to keep them from total dominance.

Good link Edward.
from that article:
She suggested that future interviews be taped after the interview with Joel Pollack. : “In addition, in my opinion, these interviews should not be done live. Inskeep is an excellent live interviewer, but live interviews are difficult, especially when there is limited time. A little contextualizing never hurts.”
Is this what we have to look forward to? The cultural Marxists are stepping it up a notch. The heat is on.
That’s pretty corrupt.

I’m so tired of the term “social justice WARRIORS”.
Warriors are tough. These idiots are still acting like 7 year olds.

I propose that they be referred to as “Social Justice LOSERS” or SJL from now on.
commented 2016-11-20 11:12:38 -0500
These SJW’s don’t have the actual #’s to make these changes alone, they need stupid people to help them, and we have no shortage of them apparently.

These people are the loud liberal alliance and they high-jacked SJW’s credibility & popularity long ago , the gain power because they have the power of the media to enhance there voice and shout down all others.

Never again look to mainstream news media or social media for truth, you will never find it.

Everyone is still too afraid to speak out against them and the liberals know that and use it to their advantage.

@ Jay Fayza

Your videos are excellent. I love your use of statistical data to support your position.

There is one thing that I would recommend. If you posted links to where you collected your statistical data people could follow along with the data on their computer screen.

Oh, btw, welcome to TheRebel. You are an excellent addition. I look forward to viewing all your videos and reading all your articles.

You are so right…but how do you get rid of the thought police?

LIZA ROSIE, thanks for the link. I had to do some searching around once I got there, but I was eventually able to find the debate and I just finished watching it. Dr. Jordan B. Peterson sure seemed to be getting frustrated by the complete lack of logic and common sense coming from the other side, and I don’t blame him. The left’s rejection of any belief in objective truth, and their embracing of “feelings” as a replacement for it is quite baffling to me. Hence the rise in criminalizing speech that hurts their feelings, and these so-called human rights tribunals.

Well spoken. Our education system from K12 to the universities are fraught with child mindedness that must be reversed.

Okay, his channel is back up on youtube. Whew!

Edward by then it will be too late. The very pompous well educated social justice academics are already getting away with rewriting our laws. C16 already passed third reading just yesterday. They seem to think our constitution is as fluid as they purport gender to be. Time to sign over your assets to your non vocal relatives (so it won’t be confiscated when you refuse to comply to the ‘disciplinary action’ dished out by the HRC.) Those crazy SJW’s are gunning for us. Ask Jordan Peterson. I sure hope he is taking appropriate measures.
commented 2016-11-19 18:09:32 -0500
I think the overwhelming majority of people here agree in some form of free speech but the problem is how do we go about fixing the system once they have spread their tentacles deep enough to shut dissenting voices down? This is what few people seem to be addressing.

“Totalitarians don’t leave, they insist on their right to silence you. That is wrong.”

You can say that again, or maybe not!
Boy, just listened to the Peterson debate and I feel weak kneed.
This is a link for the debate posted after on Peterson’s youtube page, posted by one of the commentors in the comment section of the original vid link I posted. I sure hope there is some mistake, when I go to it it says his page no longer exists. It existed this morning before the debate in Toronto at 9 eastern time. Now it says the channel doesn’t exist. WTF.
commented 2016-11-19 17:24:37 -0500
I see I still didn’t make it clear. Silencing those you disagree with is a bad thing. Freedom of speech is best tempered by freedom of association – if you don’t like what someone is saying then you should have the ability to leave so you don’t have to listen to them anymore. Similarly, if they don’t like what you’re saying, they should leave.

Totalitarians don’t leave, they insist on their right to silence you. That is wrong.
commented 2016-11-19 17:14:58 -0500
Sorry Peter, I think you’re getting athlete’s tongue again (as Lisa alluded). As far back as Orwell it was noted how the slide to totalitarianism can proceed. I understood Mette to be saying that it’s a recent thing related to middle eastern culture, to which I disagreed.

Regardless of the origins of those who want to silence their opponents, they can only have a detrimental affect upon a civil society. Evangelising atheists are among the worst I’ve seen for shouting down or ignoring those who disagree with them in the public square.

Jay Fayza you seem like an intelligent open minded young man. Also the trolls will tend to stay away from your articles since they would have to actually debate you instead of just firing the ol’ race card at you since you are not white.
commented 2016-11-19 15:30:57 -0500
Too many Universities are afraid of actual open debate. They prefer to indoctrinate and send free thinkers to their version of the gulag.
commented 2016-11-19 15:28:13 -0500
Peter i think you did misunderstand his comment , but it happens , typed words are not always clear.
And unlike the progressive twits, we humbly admit our mistakes and apologize if needed.
commented 2016-11-19 15:13:02 -0500

It could very well be that I misunderstood Michael’s comment. It wouldn’t be the first time I misunderstood what someone said and proceeded to put my foot in my mouth. ;o)

Not clicking on any link you provide Motley. Probably has a virus attached.

I’m not having the same response to Michael Doll’s comment as you are Peter. Are not Michael and Mette basically saying the same thing with Michael’s addition of, “It’s taking 1984 as a how-to guide instead of a cautionary tale.”?
What am I missing.
