I have to bring you an update to the story we covered about the Battle River School Division.
Remember those bigots?
The BRSD chair, a woman named Lori Skori, sent a letter to Cornerstone Christian Academy, a religious Christian that operates within BRSD asking the small Christian school to censor portions of the Bible being taught to students.
It was an outrageous violation of religious freedom by an elected body charged with protecting the rights of students and it set off an international firestorm. You can get the full story at TheRealBigots.Com
But it wasn't over. The BRSD is doubling down.
This time BRDS wanted Cornerstone to sign a gag order preventing Cornerstone from going public with their concerns about the school board. If Cornerstone wanted to go public with something, they would have to give the board 96 hours saying “Cornerstone Society has compromised our reputation, risked our safety and broken our trust.”
No, BRSD, you ruined your own reputation with your anti-Christian malarkey.
Cornerstone refused to say that their parents and the community in which they operate are owed transparency and proper communication.
Can you imagine? A publicly elected school board, using public dollars, is demanding secrecy so they can violate the religious freedom of others in privacy. This is Canada. We don't operate that way.
But the whole thing gets even weirder. That school board Lori Skori, the one who created this whole mess actually went to the home of Cornerstones chair, Dianna Mergel, to try to get her to sign the gag order. Mergel refused.
Think this story couldn't get any stranger? Think again.
After trying to bully Dianna Mergel at her home, Skori and the BRDS are now claiming Skori is the victim in all of this saying the attention caused by the board going public has made Skori the victim of “accusatory messages”.
What BRSD means is Skori was subject to scrutiny for her bad actions as a publicly elected official and she doesn't like it.
Now BRDS has terminated its relationship with Cornerstone and is evicting the school from the building the board owns.Unless all this bigotry directed at the school is resolved in the next 12 months, the school with have to close.
The Education Ministry released a statement saying
“Alberta Education will work with Battle River School Division and Cornerstone Christian Academy, as necessary, to ensure that the needs of all students are met”
Thanks for nothing. The NDP are sitting on their hands and watching from a distance as a tiny religious school is bullied by bigots on their school board in such a way that it will cause a much-needed school to close. And here I thought the NDP were great defenders of public education.
If you want to help Cornerstone Christian Academy in their legal fight because they aren't going to be getting any help from the NDP education minister go to TheRealBigots.Com to donate to their legal fund.
