There wasn't a whole lot of love at the Vancouver Gay Pride Parade the other day, as the local Pride Society banned both the University of British Columbia and the Vancouver Public Library from participating.
It turns out that both of these institutions had previously hosted speakers who have concerns over transgender rights.
Jenn Smith spoke at UBC last month and is known to refer to transgender women as men. In January, feminist blogger Meghan Murphy presented at the library. Her major crime is that she does not think that transgender women are real women.
Of course, the Pride Society said both UBC and the Vancouver Public Library would be allowed to march again in the future… as long as they change their room-booking policies.
The Parade did go on, attracting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau along with Elizabeth May and Jagmeet Singh. Trudeau used the opportunity to blast Conservative leader Andrew Scheer as “intolerant” for not joining them, and praised the Parade for taking a “strong stance against intolerance” with the removal of UBC and the Public Library.
