Free speech is under attack at the University of Calgary. This is the second time a Calgary student was attacked for wearing a Trump “Make America Great Again” hat after an altercation a month ago at Mount Royal University. This time, it got violent.
Andrew Brookman was walking through MacEwan Hall with a friend early Friday evening when another young man called out “Make America Great Again” and reached out for a fist bump in response to the Trump campaign hat Brookman was wearing.
I had a chance to chat with Andrew and he tells me that he was punched in the face and choked after what he thought was going to be a pleasant interaction.
Campus security interjected, detained both himself and his accuser and the police were called. The police told him that they had viewed the CCTV security footage but said some of it was blocked and due to this, determined that the altercation was consensual. Andrew says he didn’t provoke this altercation and that he’s innocent.
He was attacked for wearing a hat that someone else found offensive. Even worse, after speaking with Calgary Metro about the incident, they misrepresented some of the story.
Despite his fear, he says he’ll continue to wear it in support of free speech and our right to free expression.
Brookman has lived in countries where he’s experienced real oppression so he’ll continue to fight for these important freedoms that Canadians have died for.
