Richmond Hill resident Steffi Goodfield is a big music aficionado who decided to bolster what was once a non-existent music culture in Canada’s largest town.
She set up York Region Open Mic to book musicians and bands at local pubs at events where anyone in the audience who wants to take part for a song or two is welcome to do so.
Her labour of love has proven enormously successful, but not everyone is happy.
Richmond Hill Councillor Karen Cilevitz has sent Goodfield emails and voicemails demanding any reference to “Ward 5” be removed from the posters and Facebook information.
But not only is Ward 5 the location of the Open Mic event, it’s also in one of the band names, “Ward 5 Jam”.
Many are baffled by the threats against this fun, community event and of course, there are always two sides to a story, so I attempted to get that other side and also find out where the town stands on the issue.
