Most of my friends worked in fields that were completely unrelated to their degrees.

Most of the engineering first year programs teach less than a trade school, and as most engineers don’t go beyond a Batchelor degree, they are wasting taxpayer and their own funds.

Unfortunately, a degree of any sort is now considered the equivalent of a high school leaving certificate to most employers. Parents are still obsessed their their child being university educated and abhor the idea of a trade school.

For years everyone complained about how uneducated high school graduates were, now that same theory applies to most university graduates, and from my experience with modern students I agree.

My department had, about 30 years ago, ten to twenty exceptional students every year. When I retired, possibly one or two. Because of that, demands upon the students had dropped.
