Four high school students in Michigan were suspended after holding pro-Trump signs in front of a pro-immigrant banner placed by social justice group.
According to Breitbart, the students from Grand Rapids Christian High School held up handmade signs that read “Trump” and “Build the Wall” in protest of a banner that said “Immigrants Are a Blessing, Not a Burden”.
The pro-immigrant banner was created by a group called “Love Thy Neighbor”. They wanted to promote the 'positive impact' immigrants have on the lives of other students.
A video shows a teacher confronting the students as they pull their signs out of their pockets. School Superintendent Thomas DeJonge said the students were not suspended for their political views but for causing a disruption and allegedly making disrespectful comments to other students.
“To be clear, the students were not disciplined because of having expressed their political viewpoint,” he said. “Rather, they were disciplined because of the disruption they caused and disrespect they demonstrated toward fellow students and staff.”
However, the students protesting say they were trying to show both sides of the immigration debate and are in favour of legal immigration. They also said that 50 other students came and threatened them with violence.
Parents don't think the school should take either side. “Why are they bringing this political nonsense into the school?” one parent asked.
SOUND OFF in the comments: should the students have been suspended?
