WATCH: Rick Mercer supports Energy East pipeline: "We all need this thing"

Rebel Staff

Some fans of the CBC's Rick Mercer might have been surprised this week when the comedian devoted his trademark "rant" to the Energy East pipeline -- and called for the project to go ahead.

On The Mercer Report, he criticized pipeline opponents, especially Liberal Montreal mayor Denis Coderre.

CBC.ca reports:

"This has nothing to do with Montreal, this has nothing to do with Quebec," Mercer said. "This is about one part of Canada trying to get their natural resources to the world market."

Mercer concedes that while many Canadians "hate the fact that the world is addicted to oil and Canada is sitting on a whole bunch of it," it would be in the country's best interest to approve the project.

"We all need this thing," said Mercer.

He points out that as a "have-not" province, Quebec received $9.5 billion in transfer payments last year "as they should" to make sure all Canadians have the same standard of living.

But it's a fund that Alberta pays into because of its oil wealth, even though the provincial economy is tanking. Mercer reminded his viewers that "we are all in this together."

"It is time for provinces to start asking what's in it for Canada, not just what's in it for me."

Any government in Canada that opposes oil & gas pipelines
should lose its share of oil & gas equalization payments.

Oh so now The Rebel LOVES Rick Mercer, because he said something that you support. Prior to that, you all demanded he be fired because his comedy made your vagina bleed.

Mercer just did more for pipelines than the Conservatives and their majority did in 10 years ! The 99 MPs that we have left seem to be feminized ; only the women stand up for something.
commented 2016-01-28 20:18:43 -0500
Seriously, body snatchers or what? Didn’t sound like the Rick Mercer we all knew when Harper was in.
I hope some of the left get the message, its an important one. Its so hard to believe that just came out of his mouth!

“Hate Alberta oil”: only idiot eco-freaks do. People with half a clue love it and put it to productive use.
“addicted to oil”: cheap energy is what created whatever wealth exists in the modern world. Canadians’ healthy, wealthy, position is owed to its availability.
“Alberta getting a lot of money from oil is ugly”: No, Mercer soaking up a taxpayer funded salary from CBC is ugly.
but “Alberta spreading the wealth across Canada through equalization is a good thing”: Make up your mind, Rick. Also keep in mind that some of those provinces getting fat equalization payments, hypocrites like Quebec and NB, refuse to develop their own resources.

OK, its good that Mercer at least makes a little sense and supports Energy East, but large chunks of his rant are schizophrenic leftist nonsense. For a followup act, though, let’s see him go to bat for Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline expansion, and for Northern Gateway, and for Keystone XL. Everyone will benefit from those too.

Really impressed with what Mercer had to say, a liberal with common sense on this subject. Very well said, hope more anti oil hypocrites wake up & stand with Alberta because they sure could use a lift right now.

Mercer’s place of origin has probably made him aware of the strangle hold the Irving Oil monopoly has on the local economy, local politics and the Liberal party – he knows that the only way to break the grip of this monopoly is with competition – beter for the folks livingin those cold east coast winters – goof for Rick for dropping the partisan blinders for some common empathy with the average guy.
commented 2016-01-28 19:46:59 -0500
Ok, who was that guy and what did he do to Rick?

I’m sure you meant Mary Walsh not Rita McNeil. Rita always worked for a living.

I’d see him go on the a rant about CBC bias reporting because it would be good for all of canada.
commented 2016-01-28 18:57:06 -0500
What I didn’t like about this rant was the way he painted Quebec as only getting its fair share of transfer payments – BS they have always been getting more than their fair share – and have never given anything back – NOTHINGNEVER!!

I saw this on the CBC site. I rug burned my chin as my jaw dropped to the floor. I was astounded that far left leaning Rick Mercer would support the Energy East Pipeline, and further to the point, say something positive about Alberta. So if Rick Mercer can get behind this pipeline, maybe the rest of the hate-Alberta/hate-Alberta oil crowd could give us a break for a change and let the pipeline go through. If it makes them feel better to think about it from a different angle … it will really help New Brunswick as well. It is a win – win – win situation.

Or maybe, just maybe Andrew, you are sooooooooooo wrong that it hurt you liberal sensibilities. Perhaps your teachers were wrong. Perhaps you have never had a thought to yourself in you entire life, always relying on things like the CBC. Speaking of the CBC, did they pay you to come here to tout ridiculous things hoping to change people’s minds? Or are you just a troll for hire? Eithere way you will not change any minds and you are more like an annoying fly who does do anything useful.

Andrew Sheldon—— why the hate for Rita McNeil ? She is a really great singer.
commented 2016-01-28 18:16:38 -0500
Believe it or not; 22Minutes said some “unflattering” remarks about the PM, and his singing wife. I am waiting to hear a comparison between her and “mommy” Trudeau. She gave a few examples of “music when stoned”.

Mercer is a CBC lifer and is very UNFUNNY. Can’t stand this idiot. A government worker posing as entertainment.

Mercer is a living example of what is wrong with this Country. Mercer ranks right up there with Rita McNeil.

Nice take on Ezra’s show Keep it up Ezra your beginning to get to the media party.

Sounds like Rick Mercer might have heard the Rien De Plus campaign.
commented 2016-01-28 18:07:25 -0500
Every once in a while Mercer rises above the CBC cesspool and gives a presentation that is level headed and honest. Here is an example.

Wherever this guy is coming from, I think his statement was well said and it may open the brains of some dumbed down Liberals.

I would love to believe mercer is genuine in his ‘rant’, but I do not. If mercer had even a SHRED of integrity he would be ‘ranting’ about the abysmal cesspool of leftist entitlement known as the cbc. If mercer was a genuine he would be ‘ranting’ about the 1 BILLION TAX DOLLARS A YEAR the cbc gets to be nothing more than the liberal propaganda machine.
Sorry Rick, all I see is a cbc shill doing a ‘pro Alberta pipline’ schtick to gin up some faux credibility while your liberal paymasters continue destroying western Canada.

Wow! A CBC comedian talking some sense. Has the tide finally shifted?
