BIZZARE: This question made Mayor Nenshi throw a hissy fit

Brian LilleyArchive

Politicians can get into snits now again but I’ve never seen anything quite like what I experienced with the Mayor of Calgary as he visited Ottawa.

I’ve met Naheed Nenshi in passing a couple of times but I can’t say we know each other. Each time I’ve met him, I’ve been polite and respectful.

I posted a video of the speech Nenshi gave in Ottawa because I think he needs to be heard. Click here to watch the speech.

I was impressed with his full on defence of the oil industry and found him warm, funny, engaging but more importantly, I could tell he meant what he said. I’ve been at this long enough to know when politicians are being sincere.

Nenshi believes in Alberta oil. He spoke about how Canadian oil meets tough environmental and labour standards, how it doesn’t come from some of the nastier places on earth and, he may not like this, but it was like hearing a left wing Ezra give the Ethical Oil argument!

That’s fascinating because in Central and Eastern Canada, almost all progressives have decided that Canadian oil is dirty and pipelines are bad.

Remember Denis Coderre and the Montreal area mayors immediately saying “no” to Energy East? Montreal used to have a refinery which was pushed out by progressive politicians who didn’t want the oil industry or the jobs that went with it in their city. Then there’s Trudeau’s stance and his top advisor Gerry Butts who wants a zero carbon economy.

So Nenshi’s speech impressed me. I was tweeting as much as he spoke and I wondered, is this the man that can overcome the objections of the progressive side?

In the scrum afterwards I tried to ask him exactly that. A complimentary, respectful question that I never got to ask because he threw a hissy fit.

I’ve covered prime ministers, premiers, presidents and the Queen. I’ve stumped the best of them and have asked hostile questions of hostile politicians but NEVER in all my time as a journalist have I been treated like that.

Is it due to Ezra? I may not know Mayor Nenshi but he knows Ezra. They’ve been frenenies for nearly 25 years so maybe he was taking his anger for Ezra out on me.

In any case, he’s right - this shouldn’t be a left/right issue but it has become one. The left in Canada has decided we should say “no” to the energy industry and do without oil but, as Nenshi said, leaving it in the ground is not a rational strategy.

So I’m asking Mayor Nenshi to rise to the occasion, as a proud progressive and lefty Mayor, convince your own side of your own argument. Mostly, I agree with what you said but more Canadians on your side of the political aisle, need to hear that argument.

Are you up to that challenge mayor?

Well I stand on my initial comments, but accept that that was all I was basing my comments on and obviously there are a number of reasons why I should have followed the whole thing. For those who know Nenshi and how he acts he is a completely different animal and does fit my overall description of a Liberal. It will be interesting to follow to the greatest degree we are allowed, any meetings between the left and the left, particularly after giving the speech he gave. I think we all can pretty well predict the outcome.

You know why he is mad Brian. Remember the story http://www.therebel.media/crap_calgary_s_nenshi_wastes.
After his ignorant display of public service, now everyone knows Nenshi can be bought. What a fool this man is. He may be a fool (a fool and other peoples money make decorations on shit pump walls, but he has done more for the entire country today than what the Premier Notley has done since being elected. Remember, he also lives off of everyone else tax dollars. He just has to wait in line and take his after Justin and Rachael takes theirs.

They way he Disses you and does not even let you get your question out proves the both ways he speaks form the two sides of his mouth. he extolls the Way oil makes all of Canada Prosperous on one hand, and then Does not even Let you get your Question out, He was rattled by your presence because he knows you do not fit his mnaarative and will not just throw softballs , I actually liked His Speech, I saw it ONLY ON THE REBEL HUMMM if he would have given your question and not gone into a Left wing Hissy fit as soon as he heard the Words “coming form the Left” or From a Progressive standpoint" he does what “the left” does so well, he just does not listen and discounts what another point of view has to say, Perfect for the Liberal Dictatorship that is now Canada…. I am sure his meetings with junior will go well on Friday Brian Maybe you can have another shot at him Friday on the Hill

Define prejudice: Preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. Talk about a completely irrational response to what was a logical question considering the frame of his speech. Will the real Nenshi the Liberal please stand up. So the speech was for what? His actions toward Mr. Lilley were childish, rude, and embarrassing. The guy is a drama queen that sticks his nose in everything. The only thing he missed today was hand on hip and some finger snaps.

Yes he is well spoken. But he’s also a greedy self centred weasel

The time for talk is over it’s time to get out of this stupid country and run the left slugs slugs out of Alberta.

and there ladies and gentlemen is the true purple nurple. Childish, arrogant, immature and, as all leftists, angry. After watching that hissy fit I am even more convinced that his ‘speech’ was nothing more than posturing for the camera’s. nenshi is the mayor of a city that is the literal hub of the energy business in Canada, and that city’s economy is hemorrhaging money and employment. His highness no longer has the option of being the leftist hero picking fights with producers while spending the money those producers bring to Calgary. I can say with certainty that he has been essentially black listed by the energy companies and now his fawning leftist minions are screeching because those good paying jobs are drying up faster than a late july slough on the prairies

Nenshi is a pain in the (waste department). He also likes to make life difficult for a Christian street preacher…

He put you in the Rebel box so, as a typical progressive, already knew you would be hostile.

Ah, there’s the guy I don’t like and will never vote for. Appreciated his speech but this is ultimately his true self. Didn’t vote for him either time and would not vote for him, despite the nice speech.
