The UBC free speech club staged a public event on campus. You may recall this is the same group that proudly donned Make America Great Again and Make Canada Great Again hats to provoke conversations about the importance of freedom of expression on campus.
At Simon Fraser University, there is a student group known as Advocacy for Men and Boys. As the name suggests they focus on men’s and boy’s issues which have been ignored or dismissed in this recent wave of new age feminism.
Students at UBC attempted to start a similar advocacy group and despite having female and even transgender students supporting them, their application was rejected.
The UBC free speech club decided to stand up for this abuse of free speech and held a men’s rights and issues awareness event.
Watch as I speak with some of the organizers about their goals for the event.
These guys are obviously for freedom of speech, but what about the rest of the easily triggered university population? To out, I also spoke with some students who were passing by to get their thoughts on the issue.
The most surprising thing about the whole event was the complete lack of feminists trying to shut it down or claim the male symbol was a trigger.
Despite chatter on the ‘UBC Needs Feminism’ facebook group, nothing happened.
This gives me hope that at least at UBC, students are starting to realize that school is for the discussion of ideas and learning – not safe spaces and trigger warnings.
