WATCH: What happens when a Liberal candidate skips a debate?

Sheila Gunn ReidRebel Host | The Gunn Show

What happens when a Conservative candidate skips a local debate?

Well, the media whips a small, local public interest story into part of the national election narrative.

But what happens when a Liberal candidate skips a debate? Nothing, even when they skip a debate where the CBC has a camera crew.

It happened last night in Calgary--Nosehill.

Local debates have become a story, not because the undecided voters debates are meant to woo care, but because the media wants us to care. I don’t.

It’s just more of the same old same old. The media is telling us what we should care about and making sure we only hear what they want us to hear.

As the saying goes: If it's not a Tory, its not a story.

Drew, you say “they just did not want the MSM to run them and have real questions asked.” Who are the “they”?
commented 2015-10-14 01:54:35 -0400
Jay Kelly they called for more national debates as did the NDP, what planet do you live on? They just did not want the MSM to run them and have real questions asked.

The Conservatives decided on a strategy early on in this campaign to stay out of national debates as much as possible, not to encourage their candidates to attend local debates, and spend their advertising dollars attacking Trudeau.
Their strategy has worked. Despite experts’ claims that they could never get above 30% of popular support, the Conservatives are currently at one or two percentage points above that. And they were right all along that Trudeau was the one to beat. If they had spent millions making fun of Mulcair’s beard it would have been money wasted.

Jimmy Da Silva sorry if the truth hurts you little child, one was in the news and another was not. Duffy was covered like mad, while Levin was not even looked at by CBC> REAL JOURNALISM LMAO! Now go lie about our troops and the ROb Ford 911 call like a good fool

With respect to Sheila’s comment that those going to a candidates debate are not necessarily going with an open mind, I am reminded of Holly Nicholas’ previous report on the all candidates debate for Banff-Airdrie. Although the debate was held in Airdrie, a load of people were bussed in from Canmore (the Liberal candidate’s home town) at least an hour away, to attend and support the Liberal candidate Marlo Raynolds. Noteworthy in the video clip was Conservative candidate Blake Richards being loudly booed and mocked by Raynold’s predominant cheerleading section for accurately pointing out the Liberal candidate’s anti-oil stance.

Sorry, JDS, anyone doing an op-ed had better be prepared to back a statement up with facts. Gunn Reid failed to do that, instead relying on an experience at a forum in the Nose Hill riding, one of 338 up for grabs in this election. Not good enough in my books to make a sweeping statement about media treatment of leftist politicians absent from such events. I found a handful of articles in only five minutes to prove her wrong.

Sheila doesn’t do research – she spews her OPINION. There is no journalism going on here.

Interesting remark about media coverage of Liberals skipping out on debates" “I’ve seen nothing yet and I checked.”
As a non-partisan, I don’t know how thoroughly you did your research, but it looks like you limited all your evidence to your Nose Hill experience.
It didn’t take long for me to find numerous examples of media coverage surrounding Liberals and even NDP candidates absent from debates and forums. Instances involving Kristy Duncan and Ken Filson sprang out, as did Olivia Chow (NDP), one from Granville absent from a high school forum (although not named), even Tom Mulcair decided not to attend a women’s issues forum. yes, there were more, but I think this suffices to make a point. And from what I’ve read, coverage wasn’t particularly kind to them.
Enough of these one-sided rants and this Media Party whining, as a lot of these accounts were covered by several members of said fictitious organization. It’s getting pretty tedious when you start attacking your favourite target of disdainor one end of the political spectrum. You’d garner a great deal more credibility if you attacked them all.

I have to disagree with one point you made Sheila. You say the people who go to those debates have already made up their minds. I don’t agree. One demographic represented at debates is the undecided. Usually post-debate polls show a firming up of the support of all candidates, with the one statistic of the undecided going down. This means the candidates all earn a representative portion of the undecided who attended the debate to help them make up their minds.

Who cares, if these LW Grunts do not show up for debates. They have nothing to say, other than their usual LW Dogma.
I am not sure of the truth of this but I heard that Mulcair is going to announce a new public holiday, if, God help us, he gets elected. It is to be called ‘Love a Muslim Day’. Effin Twit.

Does this really surprise anyone? We all know that the Liberals follow their ‘cute, nice hair’ leader and lie, just like him, and the CBC as all the media do, lie as well. The CBC is such a cutthroat organization and so full of liars and deceivers that they have become blatant about being like that.

Vlad said, "We have the communist/socialist pigs and we have their MSM communist/socialist dogs. "

Pigs and dogs in bed together. That’s just about as bad as cats and dogs sleeping together. ;o)

Brian Kelly said, “I say we bring out a leather strap and as soon as one of these children throw a fit we smack them in the ass with the leather belt”

Knowing how “liberal” the average Liberal is, he/she might enjoy that.

I’ve been to 3 debates during this election. First one was a anti-oil private group, invitation only for the audience. CPC candidate did not attend due to prior commitments and was clear, they publicly turned-down the invite…. all others attended.. and there was a media frenzy. Next, an open invite to a large seniors group annual fundraiser… CPC was the only one who did attend… media was silent. Then a local nonpartisan business group, in an area that covers 3 ridings… CPC sent all three candidates… green sent 2, LPC sent 2 and NDP sent 1 (although a second NDP candidate did show briefly, but refused questions).. again, media was silent.

Calgary nose hill is a reform-CPC bastion, The liberl shoed good sense by skipping the debate – chances are the Liberals had trouble finding a candidate who was masochistic enough to take a certain beating in Nose Hill.
commented 2015-10-13 12:15:57 -0400
This back and forth gotcha crap is exhausting.

We have the communist/socialist pigs and we have their MSM communist/socialist dogs. Their job is to lie well enough to convince voters that they are a good choice.

And then there are the Conservatives – more money in your pockets through lower taxes and smaller goobamunt – makes sense, right?

So what does it come down to? Voters. The ones that pay attention to their bank accounts vs the emotional gnats that reason by screaming.

There are more of the former than the latter in Canada and the former count is getting larger over time.

Socialists/Communists are like spoiled children, as long as everything is going their way they seem to be nice, but as soon as something that goes against what they FEEL is right then they throw a temper tantrum. I say we bring out a leather strap and as soon as one of these children throw a fit we smack them in the ass with the leather belt and say “grow up”. Socialists/Communists have lobbied for many years to have the strap outlawed, that is the reason why, so these socialist/communist brats will get away with their tantrums.

Already cast my ballot in the Advanced Poll. I voted by party platform, not by any name or leader.

Liberal candidates have skipped dozens of debates around the country, especially in ridings where they are ahead in the polls. Media response? – crickets.
commented 2015-10-13 11:07:51 -0400
Be just like me, I don’t watch the CBC and it’s time for them to close their doors, or become private practice and let them go down the toilet. And before you start on me Jimmy yes the CBC is garbage.

The MSM thinks that they will dictate how everything plays out, and when the public should feign anger, and who to direct it at. I voted for Michelle Rempel on my way home from work on Friday night. I pray that the conservatives take a majority on October 19th!

Leftie main stream media hypocrisy. No real surprise.

Sheila, I like your humor. Keep up the good work!
