Meet Shawn Ahmed. Shawn is a Canadian, he’s an anti-poverty activist, and he seems to have spent much of his life doing aid and volunteer work in developing countries. He’s clearly very liberal but as an openly gay Muslim, Shawn is also a bit of a rare breed.
That should make him a darling of the left, exactly the type of modern, progressive, Western Muslim that the left hopes that all Muslim migrants will become. As long as Muslim newcomers integrate and become as liberal and tolerant as Shawn Ahmed, the disastrous open-border migrant policies won’t be as bad as many conservatives are warning.
But Ahmed has demonstrated just how wrong the left is about his religion.
After the Orlando ISIS attack, Ahmed tweeted the following:
“I’m gay and Muslim. I want to tell the Muslim community the Islamophobia being spewed now doesn’t reflect my values as a gay man.”
For good measure, he also tweeted:
“I’m gay and Muslim. I want to tell the LGBT community that the Orlando shooter doesn’t reflect my faith as a Muslim.”
Ahmed was trying to reconcile his two very different communities by sending out these two simple and optimistic tweets. He didn’t exactly get the response he was hoping for. Especially not from fellow Muslims.
The next day Shawn posted a note on Facebook saying he felt broken. He thanked his friends and family for checking in on his mental health and confessed that he’d received hundreds of awful messages from Muslims in response to the fact that he considers himself both gay and Muslim.
Watch as I review some of those messages, including wishes that he had been in the Pulse nightclub. But instead of cowering in the face of these threats, he spoke to Global News.
I don’t know Shawn Ahmed, but he seems like a really nice guy, clearly an idealist who refuses to turn a blind eye to the hateful and violent aspects of his religion.
Liberal Muslims have it tough. Rejected and ostracized by their community for having the gall to criticize Islam, they’re also often rejected by the left and fellow liberals who prefer to ignore their criticisms in order to maintain the false narrative that Islam is a religion of peace and tolerance.
The world needs more Muslims like Shawn Ahmed. Too bad most Muslims disagree.
