About 20 years ago, a male to female transexual, who called himself Kimberly Nixon, big guy, former pilot, applied to volunteer there as a rape crisis counsellor. Vancouver Rape Relief said no.
Nicely — they even offered him money for his hurt feelings, if you could believe it. But Nixon sued — he took them to the B.C. human rights tribunal.
And he won.
Vancouver Rape Relief appealed and won. But it wasn’t over. Nixon appealed. He lost, and asked the Supreme Court to hear the appeal again; they declined. So Vancouver Rape Relief “won” — after ten years of legal battles that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Now, that all happened before Bruce Jenner, before the American Psychiatric Association, before this big media-political push.
Vancouver Rape Relief is no right-wing group. They’re feminists. They’re progressive. But even they lost, at least before the human rights commission, almost twenty years ago.
