Who’s the villain? “I, Tonya” revisits figure skating’s epic cat fight

David MenziesMission Specialist

Back in 1994, the Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan rivalry made for riveting television for activities taking place off and on the ice, emerging as figure skating’s ultimate cat fight.

In the end, the disgraced and reviled Harding never medaled while Kerrigan snagged the silver.

But a new bio-pic movie I, Tonya, makes us look at the familiar storyline through a different lens, presenting Harding as a victim herself.

It makes for a cautionary tale about being too willing to join a lynch mob and jump to conclusions without knowing all the facts.

In the court of public opinion, Harding was deemed guilty without a trial, but almost a quarter-century later, I Tonya, forces us to ask, who was the real villain in SkateGate?

In a recent interview, one of many, as she seems to be doing the circuit, she was asked if she knew anything at all about the attack being planned. She said no . “I knew nothing prior, I did find out something after the fact”
In another clip ago admitted she over heard talk and told them they were crazy.

And people thought hockey was a rough sport. I remember the hype surrounding this story at the time. I never had a big interest in it but it was impossible to avoid completely. Of course it would be overshadowed by the very much more hyped OJ Simpson trial, which was even harder to avoid.

Liza, I don’t know why they made this movie either!

…man I have absolutely no sympathy for that twisted person. She allowed jealousy to consume her. Her boyfriend was consumed with greed and the hit man was, well the hit man. They should all be in jail in my opinion.
I used to follow figure skating, and funny thing is I always thought Tonya was the better skater. Kerrigan was too tall and frankly a bit stiff in my opinion, but carried out the jumps impeccably. Harding was much more expressive, fluid and creative a skater.

When I was watching a short clip of Oprah at the Golden Globes giving her speech, the camera panned and there was Tanya Harding. My first thought was, how could she have the nerve to show up? She had a lot of talent, she may have had a hard childhood, and got caught up with the wrong guy, but her hard knocks in life don’t absolve her of her part in that fiasco.

They couldn’t absolutely pin anything on her, but a 100,000 dollar fine and a life time ban from competing was one heck of a price to pay for not having anything to do with it. I think she is bottom of the barrel. I would never watch that movie, I can’t believe they made it.

Thank You for the link Tammi, most appropriate.

It would appear that there is an abundance of ‘Shit Holes’ on CNN. The meeting that was being held, where Trump is alleged to have made this comment, was a private gathering of Senators, all of whom were Republicans. All that is, except one, who was a Democrat.

Enough said.

Keith, I agree! The word alleged somehow doesn’t make it into msm reporting.

Would have been better to focus on Trumps alleged “Shit Hole” comment.

I am outraged that a black actress was not cast in the role…..was this movie supposed to garner sympathy for white trash?
