This movie review is a bit biased (for reasons you'll see when you watch.)
However, Courageous (2011) is still a compelling, well-crafted film by the Kendrick Brothers, whose unique approach to moviemaking is diametrically opposed to the one Hollywood uses to decide which projects to back.
The movie's overarching theme is fatherhood, but even though this is a Christian film, it isn't preachy. The Kendricks understand that "theme" isn't the same as "story," and that movies aren't Bible devotionals. That's one of the reason their series is so successful — in fact, the total gross of Courageous (over US$50 million) compares favourably to that of this year's big secular "indie" movie, Three Billboards... (US$75 million.)
