I know legislature business can be so boring but I actually have an exciting motion to tell you about being brought forward by Wildrose MLA Prasad Panda. It’s formally known as Motion 505 and it's pretty darn crafty:
“Be it resolved that the Legislative Assembly urge the federal government to introduce legislation to phase in a ban on the import of oil from countries with a poor human rights or environmental record and develop strategies to facilitate the building of pipelines within Canada to ensure better prices for Alberta oil and security of supply to Canadian markets.”
Motion 505 is a thing of beauty and a real no brainer when Albertans are suffering from double digit unemployment and spiralling provincial debt. Our oil is ethical, safe, and employs Canadians. Of course, we should be encouraging other Canadians to use Canadian oil first.
But there is another level of political savvy here at work in Prasad Panda’s motion.
It’s going to either force the NDP to alienate their radical environmentalist base when they have to agree that Canadian oil is the best, safest, most ethical on the planet or the NDP will reject the motion, revealing themselves for who they really are:
Fringe oil hating whackos.
It’s their call.
