Kevin Spacey is the latest Tinseltown titan accused of inappropriate sexual conduct, this time with a teen boy, but did the star make things worse for himself and the gay community with his dubious damage control strategy?
Spacey says he’s “beyond horrified” by allegations that he made sexual advances on a teen boy decades ago and despite claiming he was too drunk to remember, offered an apology.
Adding to an already questionable crisis management strategy, he then Tweeted:
“As those closest to me know, in my life I have had relationships with both men and women. I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man.”
Yikes! In trying to convey remorse over the alleged sexual assault, he waved the rainbow flag and now many in the gay community are none too pleased with his mixed message.
Will this too heal with the passage of time as appears to be the case for Roman Polanski, a man who drugged and raped a thirteen year old girl?
Or, is there a double-standard, whereby Polanski is celebrated despite actually drugging and raping a girl while Spacey is pilloried?
Perhaps Spacey’s true crime was to muddy the waters by apologizing for an act of assault while in the same sentence announcing that he’s gay.
