Edmonton has been just as bad in some areas, my condo taxes have not increased greatly but the taxes for the parking spots have risen from $19 to $49 in 9 years, they are sneaking them in some places where it is less noticeable.

I hit the wrong button there. To finish off, the size of the Inglewood business owner’s property tax INCREASE is 327 per cent.

Like I already noted, that doesn’t change the ghist of the story at all but, well, I like the math to be correct.

Not that it changes the ghist of the story but the math regarding the Inglewood business owner’s property tax increase is wrong.

It’s a common mistake. The business owner divided the new property tax bill by the old one and multiplied by 100 to get the final number of 427 per cent. That, though, is not the magnitude of the increase.

Her new tax bill is indeed 427 per cent of her old one. That’s true.

But the size of the INCREASE is less than that because the way to figure out the magnitude of the increase is to subtract the amount of the old bill from the new bill and take the result and divide it by the amount of the old bill and then multiple by 100. The size of the INCREASE
