Millarville woman’s win-a-house essay contest draws ire of Alberta’s “lottery police”

David MenziesMission Specialist

Thanks to a depressed Alberta housing market, Alla Wagner was having difficulty selling her $1.7 million, 5,000-square-foot home in Millarville, so she came up with an innovative idea and launched an essay-writing contest in which the best writer would snag the house.

Those interested in taking part would submit a $25 entry fee, and an independent judging panel would be tasked with choosing the best essay. Wagner hopes she’ll receive enough entries the world-over to result in a better price than she can get selling on the open market.

But according to a CBC story, Wagner has rubbed Alberta’s lottery regulator the wrong way.

The essay-writing contest has been referred to Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC), which includes police officers, to investigate the legality of her contest – even though she claims she worked with an AGLC agent in the gambling department to ensure she was following the rules.

It’s good to see that law enforcement in Alberta has their priorities in order these days!

But of course, Alberta, like all provinces in Canada, has a virtual state-sanctioned monopoly on gambling based on “social responsibility.”

Translation: the private sector is far too corrupt to be entrusted to sell lottery tickets.

Funny that, considering the crown entity known as the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, has long been mired in scandals resulting in the most scathing Ombudsman’s report I’ve ever read –namely, the 2009 paper entitled: “A Game of Trust.”

Meanwhile, back in Alberta, when Jane Q. Citizen comes up with a novel idea to sell her house, the province literally calls the cops to try to shut her down to protect their monopoly.

Isn’t it funny in a non-humorous way how the government now owns and controls all the “sins” that were formerly run by organized crime. Gambling, booze, drugs were once the money makers of the Mafia. How quaint the old TV crime shows we watched with great enjoyment are now, remember the “numbers racket” that so many of the Bad Guys ran?
According to historians, the Mafia had a more generous payout percentage than our government owned lotteries.

The Alberta Big Brother commission should have it’s wings clipped, just as the HRC’s should.Let’s hope a new Alberta government will rein in these agencies and get them the hell out of people’s lives.
The lady has an entrepreneurial spirit, and I wish her luck in her battle with the communists, but don’t have much hope she’ll win. It’s all about Control.

This is a writing contest, not a game of chance. How stupid can the Alberta government get? I guess we all know the answer.

So when you pay a fee to send in your application for university, would that, too, be gambling?

Your acceptance is supposed to be about merit, and if accepted you win the right to give the university more money! Oh, and you get an education based upon getting rid of white privilege, feminism, diversity, et cetera. Yea, you thought it was a degree in medicine.

And then the possibility of being accepted is further restricted by non-merit tick-boxes: Are you a women? Are you (horrors) male? Are you a “person of colour” other than pink? Are you a religious minority that isn’t Christian or Jew? Are you a feminist? Are you a foreign student? And so on… Ergo, someone with a 87 IQ black feminist transexual Muslim with a limp from a native tribe from Paraguay you win! The Canadian with a 139 IQ, well, you lost the lottery by privilege in being a straight male Christian or Jew wanting to study and get ahead.

I think this is more the story. A citizen makes the effort and obtains advice from the bureaucracy in charge, but the bureaucrat she is consulting does not have sufficient knowledge to give advice yet does so anyway. So the citizen is charged through the ineptitude of the bureaucrat she trusted.

“Stephenson” must have a gazillion degrees as it appears that the troll is an expert on basically every topic under the sun. "

I do fancy myself a jack of all trades. But int his case, I helped with organizing a friends’ social a year or two back and was told in no uncertain terms that it was illegal to run an unregistered raffle.

Funny how stuff like that happens when you go outside once in a while. Perhaps everyone wouldn’t be so angry if they paid attention to what was going on.

ps – no, I’m not Jimmy. Charred is right, note the difference in writing style. There is more than one lefty on the internet.

Common Sense you are totally lacking common sense tonight if you think I am a troll, been using this exact same moniker since shortly after this site started. But hey if you want to believe the leftard knob who is foaming at the lip then have at it if floats your boat, he succeeded in ruining two threads now, want to wager another one will be ruined shortly too? He’s destroyed countless threads, it is what he is paid to do. He is laughing now, you made his night no doubt.

As much as I’d like to believe our governments can be trusted to do the right thing, there have been far too many scandals for me to accept any such thing. Just look at the misuse of money in the BC Legislature and the emerging scandal of Trudeau pressing his Justice Minister to make a nice deal with SNC-Lavalin – and those are just the scandals that are in the news THIS WEEK! I’m sure we can all remember others, particularly the patronage scandal a few years back.

Charred, you are dealing with Andrew the fake PhD Stepenson aka John Wick aka Karen aka Jimmy aka many other aliases, all trained with the same Gordo Steele zeal and complete utter lack of knowledge or skills. All one has to do is wait until he/she/it opens the mouth and removes all doubt, the spewing of detritus, par for the course. Complete idiocy.

You’ve always had to register private raffles with the local lottery corporation. it’s just not usually worth enforcing small private events.

This is not news, other than a lady probably didn’t follow the rules and got her wrists slapped for it.
