Wynne delivers another green energy “fiasco” instead of electric car chargers

David MenziesMission Specialist

Another day, another green energy fiasco in Ontario.

In 2016, the Wynne Liberals announced plans to spend $20M on a network of 500 electric vehicle charging stations across the province, ostensibly for infrastructure to “enable EV drivers to travel between and within cities,” boost electric car sales and, of course, “fight climate change.”

Sheila Gunn Reid brought us the story of various federal government departments spending millions on barely used electric car charging stations. They managed to get those chargers up and running even if no one was using them.

In Ontario however, there’s no reliable, affordable network of charging stations since just over half the charging stations have actually been built.

And most of those are concentrated in downtown Toronto and the GTA — an area that is already saturated.

But it gets worse with users complaining about outdated software, machines that are often broken and overpriced and the company running these chargers delivering poor customer service.

Yet again when it comes to the green file, an unapologetic, unaccountable and incompetent government, over-promises and under-delivers.

It’s a wonder that Ontarians have tolerated the McGuinty-Wynne green energy program fiasco for so long, driving Ontario’s electricity rates through the roof and its economy into the toilet. Doug Ford for Ontario Premier!

Andrew are you against the oil sands?? If you are then you cannot be for rare earth mines in Canada as they are far more damaging and toxic and hazardous to people. "

It’s not inherently any more toxic than base metal mining is — or bitumen, which also generates difficult to handle tailings. China’s issue is lax regulation.

I don’t have a problem with bitumen per se, but it’s not prudent to let it take over the economy.

Andrew also the rare earth mines in China are a horror show. You cannot deny that your green ideology has a horrible side to it.

Andrew it is not easy to get in our mines yet. And we also have oil , but we import it to appease green left wingers.

Have you seen Site C? Thousands of acres of land of prime wildlife habitat scraped bare to sterile gravel. It takes more than a few beavers to make a healthy ecosystem.

Andrew sorry that is complete BS! And sorry but wind turbines do far more damage. So do solar farms.

Hey look Andrew enjoy your electric car. "

Wind turbines are relatively innocuous. Yes, they take out a few birds, but again they’re so far down the list as for anthropogenic bird kills Clear a hectare of forest and you’ve done more to damage wildlife than all the wind turbines in Ontario. I agree that solar farms are problematic, again from a habitat loss standpoint, but rooftop solar is an option that takes advantage of existing surfaces with no further damage caused.

I’m curious if you realize that Canada has absolutely enormous deposits of cobalt, for example, near the town of Cobalt, Ontario. Ethical cobalt… sounds like a huge economic opportunity for Canada, doesn’t it? We also have lithium, neodymium and other rare-earths, among others. No child-miners needed.

Everytime I hear Wynne’s name my skin crawls.

She has done as much damage to Canada as The Clown Prince Trudeau.

They both have to go because Canadians can’t afford them anymore.

POINTS TO PONDER
IN THE LAST 150 YEARS OR SO HOW MANY BIRDS HAVE BEEN KILLED BY HYDRO ELECTRIC DAMS…HOW MANY BIRDS HAVE HAD THEIR ENVIRONMENT IMPROVED BY HYDRO ELECTRIC DAMS?

IN THE LAST 70 YEARS OF NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS KILLED FISHHOW MANY FISH HAVE HAD THEIR ENVIRONMENT IMPROVED BY NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS.”

Hydro dams are by far the worst offenders, they destroy thousands of hectares of habitat and replace it with water. Due to water level fluctuations, they generally don’t produce high-quality wetlands at their edges, and high organic loads and lack of water circulation make the reservoirs themselves poor fish habitat for more sensitive native species. Also, the rotting vegetation in the flood zone releases enormous amounts of methane, a potent greenhouse gas that, pound for pound, is 25x greater than carbon dioxide.

By comparison, wind turbines have fairly minor footprints, and since most birds stay close to the ground, few kills. I believe i saw a study that the average Ontario wind turbine kills a few birds a month, negligible relative to cats, other buildings, or habitat loss.

Nuclear power is perhaps the least harmful, though incredibly expensive and puts a lot of waste heat into local water bodies, which isn’t really an improvement for native species used to cold water. The zebra mussels like it, though.

Tesla builds their own charging stations called Supercharges using their own dime though they are for Tesla owners only. No handouts from government and the things work. If you look at the map of where Tesla superchargers are you will find they are between cities on the open road (highway). There are more and more superchargers being added all the time in Canada, the US, Europe… all over the place. That’s free enterprise for you.

Wynne is a regressive (though they claim “progressive”) Liberal. The things a Liberal knows how to do with ease is to lie, overspend, overtax, destroy, and intimidate (they are the biggest bullies on the block). This holds true for ALL Liberals, it is in their DNA.

All Wynne knows how to do is waste money; introduce new tax structures and fleece Ontarians.

Wynne BS, Trudeau BS, and let us not forget Notley BS. What kind of vehicles do they drive, Pony and Traps?

Why don’t these clowns put a wind turbine on top of their cars? Charge as you drive but stay away from low bridges.

- So a failed charger system to go along with their electric car subsidies for wealthy car owners. High levels of cronyism & corruption. Yup, typical of all green energy scams.

Voters are finally discovering that their Politicians must have Business ability and Experience. Otherwise you end up with Financial Disasters built by the likes of Wynne and Trudeau.
Thanks to Trump for showing us the way.

Good commentary David Menzies. Sadly, the irresponsible incompetence of the Wynne government on the energy file will continue unabated until the next election, IF and When, the PCs can manage to elect a leader sufficient to oust her. Godspeed, PCs.
